Verna Mae Sims Gregson, age 71, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo.

 

Verna was born August 5, 1945, in Delta, Utah to George Fredrick and Velma Irene Overstreet Sims. She attended grade school in Gandy and Callao, UT. She graduated from Delta high school in 1963 then moved to Baker, Nevada. Verna was a popular waitress and bartender in both Snake and Spring Valleys, working at “Lil’s” Bar and Restaurant (later “The Outlaw”); “Majors Station” and at “The State Line” (aka The Border Inn) Verna married Julius Gregson on December 4, 1987 in Ely, Nevada. The couple resided at Lower Strawberry Creek, where Verna enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, rabbits, dogs and cats.

 

She loved embroidery and crochet; and along with her mother, Velma Sims Timm, presented the craftwork at the Borders Art and Craft Show each spring. Verna’s husband, “Julie”, passed away in 2002; she remained at Strawberry ranch for two years more, and then moved to Delta, UT to be close to her mother.

 

Verna is survived by her sisters: Ellen Wing and Betty Benson of Salt Lake City; Mary Gosselin of Las Vegas; and Tonia Meacham of Tucson, AZ; brothers: Robert (Franci) Sims of Trout Creek, UT; Raymond (Carolyn) Timm of Baker, NV, and Dennis (Cindy) Timm of Callao, UT; and numerous nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by her father: George Sims; mother: Velma Sims Timm; stepfather: Irl Timm; and sister: Dorothy Stone. A Celebration of Verna’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 20, at 1:00 p.m. (Utah time), at the “Border Inn”, Nevada- Utah Border - Hwy 6 & 50. Burial will be in the Baker Cemetery.
