Our beautiful mother, Dorothy “Dot” Glover Spencer, age 96, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 4, 2020.
Born September 30, 1923 in Kanab, Utah to John Stanley and Clarissa Amy Heaton Glover. She was the youngest of four daughters and loved her three sisters dearly. She grew up in Alton, Utah, “God’s Country”, on a family farm surrounded by horses, cows, chickens, and pigs. As a child, she enjoyed board games, sleigh rides, and Friday night dances. Graduated from Valley High School in Orderville, Utah in 1942.
After high school, she moved to Provo to live with her sister, Delna, and worked at Geneva Steel. She met her eternal companion, Douglas Jay Spencer, on a bus ride home to Alton. They were married on August 10, 1946 and later sealed for all eternity on December 27, 1956 in the Manti LDS Temple. They moved to Hinckley in 1951, where they raised their children and Dot worked at Louder’s Cafe near Delta. She made lifelong friendships with the people she met there. Also worked as care center cook for 16 and a half years and retired in 1996. Dot and Doug proudly celebrated 50 years of marriage shortly before Doug passed away in 1996.
She was a devoted member of the LDS church and had callings in Scouts, Primary, Sunday School and as the Relief Society President. Loved attending the temple. Enjoyed gardening, canning, crocheting, quilting, walking, and water walking at the pool, even into her 90’s. Her greatest joy in life was her family. Her love of her children and grandchildren was boundless. Was an avid sports fan and rarely missed a family sporting event or a Utah Jazz game. Always looked forward to family reunions and camping trips with her extended family in the Sinbad area during Memorial Day weekend, and the 24th of July spent in Hinckley. She was kind, sassy, witty, had a great sense of humor, and always maintained a positive attitude. She genuinely loved people and service. She adored Hinckley and the wonderful families there and was considered a “grandma” to many outside of her biological family. She had a heart of gold and will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Survived by her five children: Claire (Dwight) Alldredge, Shirley Reynolds, Stanley Spencer, Brent (Yvonne) Spencer, Ronald (Christina) Spencer; 17 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband: Doug Spencer; sisters: Delna Ivie, Mona Lister, Phyllis Little; son-in-law: Dwight Alldredge; daughter-in-law: Christina Spencer; granddaughter: Heidi Tuttle; grandson: Kirt Alldredge; great-grandson: Dustin Wright.
The family thanks the staff at Millard County Care Center and the staff from At Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the funeral for Dorothy has been canceled. The family will conduct a private viewing and graveside service. A memorial service is scheduled to be held at a later date. Condolences may be left at www.nicklemortuary.com
