October 29, 1938 ~ July 31, 2020
Sherrel “Sherry” Jean Morris Lewis, age 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and eternal companion of 63 years on Friday, July 31, 2020, after a valiant fight with Leukemia for five years.
She was born in Delta, Utah on October 29, 1938 to William Wesley and Evelyn LaGrace Nielson Morris. She was born into a family of eight boys and two girls and raised in Hinckley, Utah. After graduating, she moved to Salt Lake to attend Excelsius Beauty School. She married her high school sweetheart, William Leon Lewis, on August 17, 1957, in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had three beautiful children over the next ten years.
Sherry worked at Sperry Utah Missile Co. before being hired as a tech illustrator at Hercules Powder where she was selected as Miss Bacchus, enjoying the experience of riding a float in the 24th of July Pioneer Days Parade. She also became a 1st attendant to the Snow Ski Queen, even though she couldn’t ski. Sherry became very active in the Theatre 138 Company and took many leading roles. She loved to sing and took voice lessons from her Uncle Marlowe Nielsen and Ron Dom. She was always singing around the house trying to learn a song. She was in several BYU church films and held many church callings including Primary Chorister, Young Women’s President, and her last calling was as a primary teacher.
In 1975, she moved back to Delta and along with Leon opened the Lofted Gallery where she sold gifts and dress clothing until they closed it and sold the building. While in business she was asked by the Chamber of Commerce to be over the Christmas decorations for the other local businesses which included live mannequins in the Christmas windows. She also served on the Delta City Planning and Zoning Board. Sherry was the Miss Millard County Pageant Director for 17 years, where she delighted in teaching the girls to walk, talk and have fun. In 2001, Sherry won the Miss Millard Pageant “Woman of Achievement Award”. Sherry was also the director of the Delta Community Theater, producing and directing several musicals, which provided an excellent artistic influence to the area.
Her favorite place to be was Lake Powell where she went with her “dinner club” friends and enjoyed every minute. Her greatest joy was her family. She started the family “Pumpkin Carving Contest” that has been an annual tradition for 30 plus years. Her family will miss her dearly!
Sherry is survived by her husband: Leon Lewis, Delta: children: Kirk (Ellen) Lewis, Delta; Lisa (Edward) Herrera, Hinckley; Jennifer (Mel) Dutson, Delta; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren with two on the way; brothers: Sidney (JoAnn) Morris, Delta; Ed Morris, Delta; sister: Dot (Raymond) Robison, South Jordan. She was preceded in death by her parents, and six brothers.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, August 8, at 11 a.m. at the Hinckley City Cemetery. A Public Viewing will be held at the Nickle Mortuary on Friday, Aug. 7, 6 to 8 p.m. Masks and social distancing are encouraged. Online condolences may be left at www.nicklemortuary.com
