Aug. 18, 1953 ~ Sept. 26, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elven Ray Stokes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated mechanic.

Elven peacefully departed this world on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in his home in Huntington, Utah. He was born on August 18, 1953, in Price, Utah, to Carol Joyce McElprang and Ray Allen Stokes descended from “Strong English and Danish Stock.”

During his school years, Elven shone brilliantly, excelling not only in academics but also in a variety of sports. He embraced the challenges of competition and the joys of teamwork, forging lifelong memories with his peers.

In his early years, Elven honed his skills as a pipefitter in Craig, Colorado, dedicating over a decade to this craft. Later in life, he made his home in Millard County, Utah, where he employed his mechanical expertise in the service of power generation equipment.

Elven embarked on a shared journey with Rebecca Lynn Joss, and together they welcomed a son, James Gregory Stokes, into their lives. They reveled in the joys of hunting, fishing, and spirited softball games, accompanied by their loyal companion, Shammy. His prowess in sports was commendable, earning him the reputation of being a formidable athlete in various endeavors. He was a “hell of a shot!"

Elven's life was defined by a profound and enduring love for his family, even if he occasionally struggled to express it. He later married Danna L. Whitaker, and together they embraced the joys and challenges of parenthood while nurturing their beloved daughter, Katie Lyn Stokes, in the serene community of Leamington. Danna was an exceptional wife, excelling in every aspect, particularly as a talented cook who ensured Elven never missed a meal.

He relished taking Katie pheasant hunting alongside their loyal canine companions, Ripley and Bill. He cherished watching his children swim and play in the Sevier River along Tamarix Road. Together, they embarked on countless adventures in their Land Cruiser, occasionally camping on mountain roadsides. Elven delighted in witnessing Katie's passion for clogging and her curiosity in discovering ladybugs in the garden.

Photography held a special place in Elven's heart. He possessed a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and people, always keeping his Canon AE-1 close by to capture the moments he cherished. He had a generous spirit, always eager to share his treasures with others, willing to give the shirt off his back, and sending numerous books to his son James in Wisconsin, emphasizing the value of education and the opportunities he wished he'd had.

One of the high points in Elven's life was the restoration of a '67 Mustang, a project he and his son James undertook, creating lasting memories during their time together.

A pivotal juncture in Elven's life occurred when, as a high school junior, he found acceptance and love in the home of James and Shirley Mangum family. The Mangum family became his own, and he shared a deep bond with them, visiting often.

Elven dedicated many years to a fulfilling career at Intermountain Power Service Corporation, showcasing unwavering commitment and diligence in his work. Beyond his professional life, he found solace and excitement in the great outdoors, indulging in his passions for hunting and fishing, forming profound connections with nature. Elven held a deep respect for animals and cherished his dogs and cats as cherished members of his family.

Elven was a true enthusiast, an avid collector and builder of firearms, and a connoisseur of vintage cars and hobbies. He took great pleasure in the meticulous art of restoring and preserving classic automobiles. In his youth, he was known as a voracious reader, cultivating a love for knowledge and engaging in spirited debates and intellectual conversations, even with his teachers. He was a good big brother and true outdoorsman.
