Sept. 25, 1953 - Oct. 18, 2023

Lloyd Ralph Monroe passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023, in Murray, Utah, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 70.

After being diagnosed with liver cirrhosis in 2021, Lloyd devoted his energy to getting better so he could be with his family longer. After receiving a very successful liver transplant in September of 2023, he contracted West Nile Virus. Lloyd fought valiantly til the end, as he did throughout his life.

Lloyd was born in Salina, Utah, September 25, 1953, the third child of Lamar and Gwen Tuttle Monroe of Scipio, Utah. He grew up on the family ranch and learned hard work and responsibility early with daily chores like milking cows and feeding livestock. Lloyd was exceptionally strong from a young age, and he used his strength in hauling hay and bucking bails. He also had a voracious curiosity which he satisfied by science experiments in the laundry room, monopolizing the encyclopedias, and studying history with his mom. He was always asking why. His was a loving and loyal family and he adored his siblings.

Lloyd graduated from Fillmore High in 1971. He was active in FFA and served as Student Body President. He faithfully served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Rosario, Argentina, from 1972-74. After returning, he met his angel, Julie Henderson, and they fell instantly and deeply in love. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple in March 1976. He graduated from Utah State University in both Accounting and Economics in 1977. They began their family right away and moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where he worked as an accountant. He served in the bishopric in their ward. They were blessed with five children in Pocatello before a new job, General Manager of the South Idaho Press, took them to Springdale, Idaho, in 1988.

It was while living in Springdale that Lloyd and Julie became small business owners, and then later that Lloyd reinvented himself vocationally by becoming a highly-skilled database administrator in the early days of computing. They also added two more children and put down deep roots in the community. Lloyd served as a Young Mens and Boy Scout leader, Primary teacher, High Priest Group Leader, Gospel Doctrine and Sunday School teacher, and in the Bishopric. Lloyd loved all his callings because the important part to him was having the opportunity to serve others. He particularly loved serving the youth.

Lloyd loved people and made conversation everywhere he went, from the gas station to his hospital room. He took the time to ask people where they were from and about their families and followed up next time he saw you. People were often surprised by his memory for details. Of course, he would also tell you about his family and how proud he was of them.

When not working or spending time with family, Lloyd filled his time with service, learning, and projects. He delighted in making improvements around the house and yard. He always preferred to figure out how to do it himself and enjoyed acquiring new skills like woodworking or cooking. With kids scattered across the country, he relished visiting them and working on projects, while doting on his grandkids. He was an active member of the Burley Lions Club, a big Utah Jazz fan, and a daily gym attendee.

Lloyd was a man of character who strove daily to progress. He set goals and worked diligently on weaknesses. He was without guile and unwaveringly honest. He had a forgiving nature and saw the best in others. He could work harder and longer than people half his age. Lloyd loved his Savior, the Gospel, his family, his community, big ideas, the natural world, music, a good cookie, and a good steak. And his Julie.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Julie; his children, Matt (Shannon) Monroe, Jena (Carlos) Reynoso, Jeremy (Emily) Monroe, Marcee (Eric) Ludlow, Hollijo Monroe, Jordan Monroe (Kyra Hermann), Melisa Monroe, and former daughter-in-law, Melissa Monroe Robinson; 23 grandchildren; as well as his siblings, Jeanne (Gordan) Young, Lee (Mary) Monroe, Mark (Jenene) Monroe, Mary (Larry) Shumway; and his in-laws, LaDene (Doug) Rovig, Kathy Henderson, Lisa Henderson, and Lon (Carrie) Henderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; baby brother, Paul; granddaughter, Mallory Monroe; in-laws, Ralph and Lena (Rawlins) Henderson, R. Jay Henderson, and Roger Henderson.
